Artist Statement
Dan is a man who was born with an innate drive to overcome any obstacle. This was a gift for Dan because he was born with quite a few obstacles to overcome but the Community Living Society gave him the support to do it and that brought him to the PotteryWorks program. Dan grabbed this chance with both hands and was determined to develop himself as an artist, from the beginning.
Dan has been an important part of this multi-media studio for over twenty years, developing as a potter and photographer but Dan’s real direction is as a landscape painter. Together with his coworker James, Dan has explored the City of New Westminster from one end to the other, photographing subjects that spoke to him. Dan used these photographs as references for a series of landscape paintings for the Anvil Centre Show “Three Visions : Walking in New West“.
A particular interest for Dan, is a neighborhood scene, family homes or a park. A suggestion of home and belonging, community or a peaceful and natural respite from a hectic urban experience. This is the view of Dan’s community, through his lens and from his brush, his acceptance by it and inclusion in it.
Dan has painted this new group of works for the “Searching for Surrey” show. Paintings depicting some of the incredible diversity of the City of Surrey.
